The Almitra spoke again and said, "And What of Marrige, master?"
And he answered saying:
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness.
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another but make not a bond of love.
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each othere's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone.
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together.
For the pillars of the temple stand apart.
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.
알미트라가 다시 물었다. "그렇다면 스승님, 결혼은 무엇인가요?"
그가 대답했다.
그대들은 함께 태어났으니, 영원토록 함께일 것이다.
죽음의 흰 날개가 삶의 나날들을 흩어버릴 때도 함께일 것이다.
아, 그대들은 함께일 것이다. 신의 말없는 기억 속에서도.
허나 함께 있어도 거리를 두라.
천국의 바람이 그대들 사이에서 춤출 수 있게.
서로 사랑하되 그 사랑으로 구속하지는 말라.
사랑이 두 영혼의 육지 사이에서 출렁이는 바다가 되게 하라.
서로의 잔을 채워주되, 하나의 잔만을 비우지 말라.
서로가 빵을 나누되, 하나의 빵조각에서만 취하지 말라.
함께 노래하고 춤추고 즐기되, 각자 홀로 있게 하라.
비록 같은 음악을 울릴지라도 현악기의 줄들이 서로가 달리 있듯이.
서로의 마음을 주되, 소유하려 하지 말라.
그대들의 마음은 오직 생명의 손만이 가질 수 있는 것이니,
함께 서 있으되, 너무 가까이 하지 말라.
신전의 기둥이 서로 떨어져 있듯이,
그리고 참나무와 사이프러스 나무가 서로의 그늘에서 자랄 수 없듯이.
