이곡은 처음에 1970년 리타 쿨리지(Rita Coolidge)에 의해 발표된 곡이다. 원곡은 상당히 늘어지는 재즈풍의 발라드였다.
카렌은 이 노래가 수록된 앨범을 자주 들어서 이미 이곡을 알고 있었다. 리차드가 투나잇쇼(Tonight show)에서 베트 미들러(Bet Midler)가 이곡을 커버하는 것을 듣고는 이 곡의 포텐셜을 감지하고 바로 편곡을 하여 1971년에 발표하여 빌보드 차트 2위까지 올라간다.

1969년에 발표된 이 곡은 처음에 Kelly Gordon에 의해 불려졌고, 이후에 The Hollies에 의해 불려져 전세계적인 히트를 기록한다. 가사도 그렇고 가수의 이름에서도 가스펠적인 느낌이 물씬 묻어난다.
이 곡의 제목인 'He ain't heavy, He's my brother'의 유례는 1884년에 스코틀랜드에서 출간된 '예수 우화(The Parables of Jesus)'라는 책에 나온 이야기이다.
이야기의 내용은 어떤 어린 소녀가 덩치가 큰 아기를 업고 가는 모습을 본 누군가, "아이야 힘들지 않니?"라고 물어보자, 놀랍게도 그 소녀는 "아니에요, 얘는 무겁지 않아요, 얘는 내 동생인걸요." 라고 대답했다고 한다.
이런 이야기는 이후 유럽을 거쳐 미국에까지 계속 전승, 변형되어 왔다. 특히 유럽과 미국에서 대공황과 2차 대전 이후에 부모를 잃고 고아가 된 아이들이 늘어나면서 이런 류의 도시 우화들이 이어져왔다.
노래 제목이 Bette Davis' Eye(눈), Bette Davis는 1930년와 40년대를 풍미했던 미국의 대배우이다. 사진에서 보듯이 에머랄드 같은 매혹적인 눈빛으로도 유명했다.
1908년생인 베티 데이비스는 1935년(28세)와 1938년(31세)에 아카데미 여우주연상을 2회 수상했고, 베니스와 칸영화제에서도 여우주연상을 수상한 대배우이다.
이 곡은 베티 데이비스의 매혹적인 눈을 테마로 쓰여진 곡으로 원곡은 1974년에 도나 와이스Donna Weiss와 잭키 드섀넌Jackie DeShannon에 의해 쓰여졌고, 잭키 드섀넌이 노래를 불렀다. 당시에는 큰 인기를 끌지 못했다(원곡을 들어보면 R&B 스타일로 킴 칸스가 부른 전자음악과 결합된 락버젼의 이 노래와는 완전히 틀리다).
1981년 킴 칸스(Kim Carnes)가 리메이크하면서 전세계적으로 대히트를 기록했다. 그 당시에 라디오만 틀면 이 노래가 나오고 이미 70대가 되버린 잊혀진 배우인 베티 데이비스가 언론에서 재주목을 받게 되는 계기가 되었다.
당시 베티 데이비스가 킴 칸스와 작사/작곡가에게 감사 편지를 보낼 정도였다고 한다. 1981년 그해 그래미Grammy에서 이 곡과 이 곡이 수록된 앨범은 각각 그해의 노래(Song of the year)와 그해의 앨범(Album of the year)를 수상한다. 수상 후에도 베티 데이비스가 세 사람에게 장미를 보냈다고 한다.
베티 데이비스는 1989년에 암으로 사망했다.
노래 가사는 베티 데이비스와 같은 어떤 매력적인 여성의 팜프파탈적인 매력에 대해 묘사하고 있는데, 당대 금발로 유명했던 여배우인 진 할로와 신비한 이미지의 그레타 가르보도 여성의 매력을 묘사하는 모티브로 가사에 등장한다.

예전부터 멜로디는 알았던 곡이었지만 이 노래를 제대로 알게 된 계기는 몇년 전 개봉한 영화 <이터널스(Eternals)>의 예고편의 음악으로 쓰였기 때문이다(본편에서 이 노래가 OST로 나왔는지는 잘 모르겠다).
웬지 서정적 멜로디의 노래를 SF블록버스터의 예고편 주제가로 사용한 언발란스함때문에 더욱 각인되는 효과가 있었지 않나 싶다. <이터널스>의 주요 위기가 세상의 종말이었기 때문에 광고영상에 이 노래를 사용했을 것이다.
그리고 최근에 나온 하루키의 소설 <도시와 그 불확실한 벽>을 읽고 나서 그 전작(?)이라 할 수 있는 <세계의 끝과 하드보일드 원더랜드>를 다시 읽기 시작했는데 그 책 서문에 이 노래의 가사가 등장하는 것을 인식하게 되었다. 하루키의 초기작품을 보면 이렇듯 대중가요의 가사가 서문으로 등장하는 일이 종종 보인다.

존 레논 최고의 명곡. 비틀즈 시기와 솔로 시기 모두 천재적 음악성을 드러낸 불세출의 뮤지션.
이 노래는 당시 6년간 진행되어 수많은 전세계(특히 미국과 한국은 주축 참전국으로 가장 큰 인적 피해를 봤다) 젊은이들이 희생된 베트남전에 대한 반발로 일어난 반전과 히피운동의 분위기에서 탄생했으며 가사는 평화와 자유에 가득찬 이상적 세계관을 담고 있다.
난 어린 시절부터 비틀즈를 좋아했고 비틀즈 해체 이후의 솔로 활동에서는 존 레논을 가장 좋아했다.
비틀즈의 팬들이 대개 그렇듯이 존 레논의 아내인 오노 요코에 대해서는 별로 좋지 않은 감정을 갖고 있었는데, 나이 들어서 이 뮤직비디오를 비롯해서 존과 요코가 함께 나온 영상을 보면 두 사람이 얼마나 사랑했는지를 뚜렷하게 느낄 수 있다.
팬심으로서 존 레논을 빼앗겼다는 팬들의 질투심에 의한 요코에 대한 악의적 소문이나 이야기들을 많이 접하면서 나도 맹목적으로 그녀를 악마화했던 것이 아닌가 싶다.
오노 요코의 스토리를 알고 보면 그녀는 매우 불우한 어린 시절을 보냈고 성인이 되어서도 그리 행복한 시기를 보낸 적이 없다. 존 레논과 요코의 만남은 둘다 배우자가 있는 상태에서 시작된 불륜이었다. 그러나 결국 그 둘은 결혼을 했으며(존 레논은 두번째, 오노 요코는 세번째) 존 레논과의 결혼 생활은 그녀의 인생 중 가장 행복한 시기였으나, 그것도 존 레논이 암살당하면서 11년만에 파국을 맞게 되었다.
요코와의 관계가 시작되면서 비틀즈가 해체되었고, 결혼생활동안 솔로 활동을 했으며 그의 음악에는 아내인 요코의 영향이 지대하게 작용했다.
존 레논이 솔로활동 중에 낸 앨범들에도 명반이 많으며 특히 죽기 직전 발표한 앨범 <Double fantasy>의 타이틀곡인 'Starting over'는 발표후 곧바로 빌보드 차트 1위에 올랐으며, 그의 사후에 죽음을 예견한 듯한 가사로 다시 화제가 되어 1위에 재등극하기도 했다. 당시 한국에서는 'Starting over'보다는 그가 아내 오노 요코를 생각하며 쓴 노래인 'Woman'의 인기가 더 높았다(나도 개인적으론 Woman을 더 좋아한다).
'Woman'의 도입부에는 존 레논이 "For the other half of the sky(하늘의 다른 반쪽을 위하여)"라는 구절을 속삭이는데, 이 구절은 물론 여성을 의미하는 것이고 이 말은 모택동이 했던 유명한 말 중의 하나다. 참고로 모택동의 3대 어록이라고 전해지는 것이 있는데, 첫째가 권력은 총구에서 나온다. 둘째가 여성이 하늘의 절반을 받치고 있다. 세째가 인구는 국력이다.

곡의 분위기는 1989 앨범 시절의 blank space를 느끼게 한다. 가사의 분위기는 시니컬하면서 자기혐오적이고 괴기하다. 이런 곡의 분위기는 1989 시절의 blank space나 clean을 떠올리게 한다.
항상 긍정의 마인드같은 것을 강요하는 듯한 사회의 분위기에 지친이들이 도리어 이런 가사에 끌리는 것 같다.
노래가 발표된지 이제 1달쯤 된것 같은데 벌써 조회수가 6천만회다. 노래가 좋기도 하지만 가장 성공했던 앨범 1989의 분위기가 나면서 어쩐지 레트로한 느낌도 있다.

텐트밖은 유럽 7회를 보다가 이 노래가 나왔다. 토스카나의 풍경이 펼쳐지면서 이 노래가 나왔는데 풍경과 너무나 어우러지면서 귀에 박혔다. 반지의 제왕에 이 노래가 나온다는데 반지의 제왕을 몇 번이나 봤지만 이 노래가 나온지는 인식하질 못했었다.
싸이프러스 길을 보면서 여기 글래디에이터에서 막시무스가 집으로 가던 길과 흡사한 분위기(로마 시대가 배경이니 아마도 촬영지가 이탈리아였을지도 모른다)랑 비슷하다라고 생각했는데
마침 진선규 배우께서 비슷한 느낌이 있었는지 이런 얘기를 했다.
스페인 여행시 마드리드에서 톨레도와 라만차 지역을 갔을 때도 이런 너른 평야지역이 있었다. 스페인에서는 대부분이 광활한 평지라서 거대하다는 느낌만이 강했는데 여기 토스카나는 구릉지역이 많아서 그런지 시각적으로 장엄하다는 느낌이 더해진다. 한번 가보고 싶어지는 광경이다.
노래의 가사를 음미해봤는데 내용도 좋다. 중간에 이건 뭔 말이야? 하는 단어들이 있어서 찾아보니 꿰냐(Quenya)어로 톨킨이 반지의 제왕을 쓰면서 창조한 언어이다. 톨킨 자신이 언어학자로서 고대언어에 대한 연구를 하면서 반지의 제왕의 모티브들을 얻었다고 한다.

가사에서도 어느 정도 보이지만 결혼한 후의 부정에 대한 내용이다. 이 곡이 발표되기 직전에 이혼을 했기 때문에 그 영향을 받은 곡이라고 생각된다.
엘튼존은 1976년 롤링스톤스와의 인터뷰에서 양성애자라고 커밍아웃을 했으며, 1992년 롤링스톤스와의 재차 인터뷰에서 자신은 게이로서의 삶이 더 편하다고 이야기를 했다. 2014년에 남성이랑 결혼해서 현재까지 살고 있다.

아바가 40년만에 새로운 앨범 발표를 예고하고, 오늘 그 중에 신곡을 발표했다.
가장 나이가 어린 앙네타가 1950년 생이니 이미 모든 멤버가 70이 넘었다. 내년도 봄에 영국에서 콘서트가 예정되어 있다는데 개인적으론 기대도 되지만 우려도 된다. 이미 70년대의 활동만으로도 음악계의 레전드가 되어 있는 그들이 그 이상을 보여줄 수는 없을 것이다.
그들이 돈이나 그런 이유로 다시 앨범을 내고 콘서트를 하는 것은 아닐 것으로 본다.
오늘 유튜브로 발표된 신곡을 들으니 곡의 호불호를 떠나서 찡한 마음이 든다. 아바는 인류의 역사가 계속하는 한 영원할 거다.
독일의 듀오 Modern talking의 곡. 1984년에 발표되었던 유로댄스 곡이다. 내 기억으로는 1990년대 초까지도 한국의 디스코장에 가면 이 음악이 흘러나왔다.

1976년 발표된 곡으로 당시 미국에서는 아바의 노래를 캔디팝으로 부르기도 했다고 한다. 디스코 초창기로 아직 디스코라는 음악이 정립되던 시기로 디스코적인 면이 약간 느껴지긴 하지만 본격적이진 않다. 그 시절의 무도장을 가볼 기회는 없었지만 아마도 당시 무도장을 주름잡던 곡이었을 것이 틀림없다.
